differences between two medicines. However, there may be differences
in specific herbal mixtures and body therapy practices that have
developed over time.

| Question: |
How does a Chinese medical doctor judge
body type ? |
Chinese medicine doctors use four basic methods to diagnose illness:
| 1) Look(望) |
The doctor looks at the patient's face and tongue color. |
| 2) Smell (聞) |
Through years of training and experience, a doctor is able
to detect subtle changes in a patient's body from the way
it smells. |
| 3) Ask (問) |
Just as a Western doctor would do, a Chinese
medicine doctor will ask a patient to describer his or her
symptoms. |
| 4) Touch (切) |
The Chinese medicine doctor will touch
both the right and left arms of the patient, to feel his
or her pulse.
In Japanese traditional medicine, the doctor also checks the patient’s belly. |
These techniques allow the Chinese medicine doctor to determine
the basic character of a patient and his or her strengths and weaknesses. They
also allow the doctor to detect imbalances in the patient's body
and suggest which medicines may help restore the body to normal.

As with Western medicine, a Chinese doctor’s first concern is
to help cure his patient’s illness. Dr. Higasa has been thoroughly
trained in Western medicine, but does not provide Western treatments
in Kokyosha Clinic. While Western medicine helps in many situatons,
Dr. Higasa feels many Western doctors should also use Chinese medicine
as an additional strong weapon for fighting disease. When a doctor
has more weapons, his battle with disease becomes easier. Dr. Higasa’s
goal is to give patients advice about how to combine advanced Western
medicine with Chinese medicine. He then provides only the Chinese
medicine treatment in his clinic.
